The Nail Tech curriculum involves 180 hours to satisfy State of Florida Cosmetology Board requirements. The program includes extensive instruction and practical experience in manicures and pedicures, artificial nail application, removal and repair, gel nails, polishing and nail art , customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, and business ethics, as well as sanitation, Florida state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing. Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) is the licensing entity.

*Students are prepared to be entry level nail tech.

This program is taught in English. Textbooks and Course Materials are only taught in the English Language.

 

NAIL TECH PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Program Hours: 180 clock hours

The program is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Floor Learning Experience: The remaining hours are spent in the clinic floor area where practical experience is gained.

NAIL TECH PROGRAM OUTLINE

Your time at Paul Mitchell The School Fort Myers for the nail tech program will be divided into seven (7) designations:

  1. Core Curriculum: The first hours of orientation and training, known as the Core program, instills the basic fundamentals. Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral, and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes in cutting, color, permanent waving, and chemical texture services.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: Your clinic floor time will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences using workshops, monthly worksheets, and periodic exams developed specifically for monitoring progress. This is when you begin working on paying service guests in the clinic classroom.
  3. Classroom Learning Experience: Your classroom time is divided into six (6) areas: manicure and pedicures, artificial nail application, removal and repair, gel nails, polishing and nail art.  Each area has a Skill Specialist in the field who conducts the different specialty classes once a week; these may include guest artists, retail (Take Home), motivation, self-improvement, or nail artistry, etc.

NAIL TECH COURSE SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS

Course Subject Description 

Course NT101 Florida Cosmetology Laws and Rules:

This course teaches the Florida state laws and regulations in the field of cosmetology.

Course NT102 Sanitation:

This course teaches the proper ways to sanitize implements . It also reviews the types of bacteria, covers the Milady chapter on sanitation and disinfection

Course NT103 Ethics:

This course teaches the definition of ethics and how to apply those principles in the nail industry.

Course NT104 Nail Theory, Practice and Related Subjects including nail disorder and diseases including but not limited to HIV/AIDS:

This course teaches nail theory, the structure of nail and the disorders and diseases, including the causes of HIV and AIDS that can and cannot be treated by nail technician.

Course NT105 Manicures:

This course teaches how to prepare the nails and hands for a manicure and the steps to in completing a manicure.

Course NT106 Pedicure:

This course teaches how to prepare the nails and feet for a pedicure and the steps to in completing a pedicure..

Course NT107 Tips and Overlay:

This course teaches the different kinds of nail enhancements or extensions, how to prepare the nail, how to apply and remove.

Course NT108 Sculpting Using a Form:

This course teaches the different kinds of nail forms and the benefits and steps to using them properly.

Course NT109 Nail Wraps and/or Mending:

This course teaches the purpose of and steps taken to properly use wraps and/or mending methods.  

Course NT110 Nail Fill-Ins:

This course teaches the products needed for fills along with proper use and sanitation with each, including application procedures.

Course NT111 Artificial Nail Removal:

This course teaches the proper steps and sanitation procedures to follow when removing artificial nails.

Course NT112 Polishing and Nail Art:

This course teaches how to prepare the nail and apply polish and nail art, along with specific methods and their benefits.

Course NT113 Gel Nails:

This course covers the chemistry of gel nails along with the various types and how to prep, apply, and remove gel nails.

In addition to the state requirements listed above, Paul Mitchell The School Fort Myers provides training in the areas of communication skills, professional ethics, salesmanship, decorum, record keeping, and client service record cards.

NAIL TECH PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 160-hour course:

  1. Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each assigned theory exam. Exams are completed at the conclusion of each online theory module. Depending on the length of the distance education module, theory exams will occur weekly or bi-monthly. 
  2. Core written and practical skills evaluation: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 75% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date. 
  3. Final Exam: This exam covers an overview of all related nail subjects (e.g., anatomy, chemistry, etc.). Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams. 

NAIL TECH INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODS

The nail tech 180 hour course are provided through a sequential set of learning steps which address specific tasks necessary for State Board preparation, graduation and job entry level skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative and productive career oriented activities. The course is presented through well-developed lesson plans that reflect the latest educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods are used in the course.
